Ear care whilst flying
20 March 2008
Having a build up of pressure during take off and landing can at best be uncomfortable and worst painful. Babies and children may also find it frightening if they haven’t flown before. We may not be able to prevent this from happening, but we can try to make less traumatic and distressing by following a few simple rules.
Although young children often complain of ear-popping pain, particularly on landing, babies tend not to suffer as their eardrums are still underdeveloped.
If your baby does appear to be in pain try our tips, but airlines say you must ensure your child is still strapped in with the specially extended seat belt.
To help prevent ear popping during take off and landing try the following tips:
- Feed your baby - either breast feed or bottle feed during take and landing
- Use a dummy - if your baby or child has a dummy get them to suck on it as this can help prevent the build up of pressure.
- Give your child a sweet to suck on.
