European Health Insurance Card and travel insurance - have you got yours?

20 March 2008

European Health Insurance Card (EHIC)
If you’re going to a European Economic Area (EEA) country or Switzerland, you should also make sure you’ve got a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as well as private health insurance. The card entitles you to reduced cost, sometimes free, medical treatment in most European countries. The ‘EHIC: free or reduced cost treatment’ section of the Department of Health site has more information, including:

  • where it is valid
  • what it covers
  • who is eligible
  • how to apply.

Travel insurance
Make sure that once you have decided where you are going you take out the necessary insurance for all of your family. Ensure that you are aware what your insurance does and does not cover. If you are unsure ask your insurance company to explain the small print.
Always make sure you have insurance and never travel without full medical and repatriation insurance. Take a copy of your insurance documentation with you.

Tip
Photocopy your insurance and leave a copy at home.
