The forecast in the UK seems to be for rain, rain and more rain, which is OK for some and apparently what the gardens need. I, however, don’t need anymore! We will be off to Majorca soon for another break. I hope that when we return the Barbecue summer has finally reappeared.

Summer never really got away in the UK and it has certainly gone now. However, looking on the bright side we can take a break not far from home and not actually expect the weather to be warm and dry! For me, anyway, the joy of September is that I no longer wake each morning hoping to see the sun shining. Feature for July - Finding the ideal family holiday

Finding the perfect family holiday seems to be getting more and more difficult in this house. With two teenage boys it is proving hard to find a place to stay that will suit us all. We, the grown ups,that is, would like peace and quiet. I would prefer that it is hot, whereas, my husband isn’t so bothered as long as he can go for some interesting strolls. By that he doesn’t mean hiking, he means a stroll with a view, such as a walk along the beach or through an interesting town. The children want to have a pool to play in for a while, but also space to play football, cricket or some other game usually involving a ball. They also want to visit gift shops and be able to walk to a shop to buy an ice cream. Easy. Well not so it has proved.

With the summer holidays and endless weeks of children needing entertainment why not head for Alton Towers? Admittedly the queues can get very long during busy times, but with it’s beautiful grounds you can stop off for a picnic and you’ll certainly have plenty to do and see for a whole day. However, a tip is to go on a school inset day or training day. That way you’ll find the park much quieter. Whenever you go you’ll find something for everyone; even non thrill seekers!
Getting there early is a must. As I’ve mentioned the queues can get quite long for the more popular rides, so you’ll need a full day to make the most of everything that there is to offer. The park is signposted clearly from the M6 although you’ll find yourself well and truly out in the sticks when you find the park itself. Even I have managed to find it in one go and, therefore, I dare say anyone can!
Alton Towers has all the thrills you’d expect, but they also cater for the littlies too. Visit Old Macdonalds Farmyard and Cred Street to keep the toddlers happy. They also offer facilities such as Parent Queue Share and Free ID bands available on site. You’ll find baby changing facilities throughout the park and there’s even a shop where you can buy anything you may have forgotten such as nappies and even Calpol. Pushchairs are available to hire for the day.
If you want to make a short break of it, why not stay at one of the hotels? When you’ve finished with the theme park there’s the Waterpark and two nine-hole crazy golf course to entertain the family.
